Ilya Yefimovich Repin, born of Russian military settlers in the Ukraine in 1844, was Russia's premier painter in the late 19th and early 20th century. He went to St. Petersburg in 1866 when he was 22 and was soon admitted to the Imperial Academy of Art. He managed a trip to Italy and lived in Paris for a while, where exposure to French impressionists affected his use of color and light, but his technique continued to be largely classical. He painted a number of historical scenes as well as portraits of famous people during his lifetime. One of his more famous paintings, "Ivan the Terrible and His Son," begins the video and shows a distraught Ivan embracing his dying son after he himself had struck the fatal blow in an argument.
